Brunch at Trattoria Centrale

Our favorite Sunday brunch spot in Birmingham. If you live in the area and haven’t been to Trattoria Centrale downtown you should make plans to go this weekend! Everything is farm fresh and local down to the coffee and milk, and make sure to try the chocolate orange scones…they are the BEST!

The Forest Feast

I love to look at these recipes…and try them too! They are beautifully designed and artfully photographed. Erin, author and blogger, worked as a photographer for the James Beard Award and the New York Times Dining section (pretty neat!). She threw a party in the forest once and blogged the gorgeous pictures…I secretly wish I could have been there! Check out theforestfeast.com for some great recipes and beautiful pictures!

Cast Iron Skillet

A gift from my parents for my 25th birthday that just gets better and better with time! After having it for a few years and seasoning it after each use it makes everything taste more delicious!!

The Cookerwoman’s cookbook

One of the most prized possessions in my kitchen…the cookerkwoman’s cookbook. For my 25th birthday my dad made a cookbook with family recipes, stories from his travels and restaurant adventures, and lots of pictures! If you’re lucky I may share a few secret family recipes on the site!

bánh phở

Phở is a bowl of goodness. A complex broth with simple ingredients: thinly sliced beef or chicken, rice noodles, fresh lime juice, and fresh garnish of sprouts, cilantro, thai basil, and jalapeños. It’s one of the most comforting foods to eat! I hope to master a recipe and share it on the site….the secret is getting the broth just right!

Pink Martini

My friend Kirby introduced me to this band and it has quickly become one of my favorites! The best music to have on in the kitchen while cooking! Pink Martini is made up of a dozen musicians, and performs their collection of multilingual melodies on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, North & South America. If you’re looking for something fun to play as you cook for date night check them out!

Cookbooks I’m currently using

Korean Food

It’s a favorite meal for my hubby and I. Check out the recipe book as I will share some Korean family recipes from my mother-in-law!

The Perennial Plate

This is a fascinating site with an online weekly documentary series dedicated to socially responsible and adventurous eating. It’s unlike anything you will see on The Cooking Channel or Food Network! See more on their site theperennialplate.com

Who doesn’t love Pinterest?! Check out my page at pinterest.com/thecookerwoman.

Wooden Spoons

One of the most used cooking utensils in my kitchen. I love cooking with wooden spoons for a number of reasons, they don’t ruin the bottom of your pans, they aren’t conductive so they don’t get hot when cooking on the stove, and you can cook with the same wooden spoons for decades (as long as they are properly cleaned and cared for!)

Fresh herbs

In my kitchen you will find me cooking with mostly fresh herbs…I think it makes all the food tastier. I freeze leftover herbs in little ice cube trays with coconut oil or olive oil to cook with in the future. It’s a great way to save and not waste fresh herbs! It’s a goal of mine to plan an herb garden but I don’t have too much luck keeping plants alive!

The Holy Kale

This girl is on a mission! Her blog is full of recipes & information for overall health…hormone balancing food, herb diets, dental health, cleansing, vegan recipes, detoxing, juicing, and so much more. I love learning about the body and health so if you’re into that you should check her out at theholykale.com.

Having good quality knives is essential to creating a great dish! It’s worth the investment to get good chef knives or ceramic knives.

Love & Lemons

Another great blog I frequent for delicious recipes! Take a look around at loveandlemons.com

I just can’t put into words how much I love my little espresso maker! Coffee after dinner is a must at the Song house!
